Course Descriptions

Business honors classes are offered at all levels, starting your freshman year. Classes are available in all five disciplines - accounting, finance, information and operations management, management, and marketing.

The Curriculum

Here’s an overview of the business honors courses we regularly offer. Additional courses are available through independent research and honors contracting.

Courses

ACCT 229 - Introductory Accounting (offered Spring and Fall)
In this course, you will gain an understanding of the analysis, recording and reporting of business transactions, partnerships and corporation accounting. In addition, you will learn how to analyze and use financial statements.
Prerequisite: Sophomore classification

ACCT 230 - Introductory Accounting (offered Spring and Fall)
A continuation of the first introductory course, you’ll learn to use budgets and will be introduced to cost accounting, cost control techniques, and methods of measuring performance.
Prerequisites: ACCT 229 and sophomore classification

BUSN 125 - Freshmen Business Initiative Honors (offered Fall)
The primary objectives of this course are to enhance understanding of personal and business competencies (skills) needed to be successful in the business world, and to provide a smooth transition to the university environment through interactions with business faculty, staff, and peer leaders.
Prerequisite: Selection for Mays Business Honors

FINC 267 - Introduction to Securities and Commodities Trading (offered Spring and Fall)
Introduction to financial markets and the instruments that trade in them; describes how financial markets operate; compare and contrast a wide variety of common financial instruments, including debt, equity, derivatives, and commodities; basic functions of real-world data sources (especially Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal); and career paths in the field of finance.
Prerequisite: Freshman or sophomore classification in business administration

FINC 341 - Business Finance (offered Fall)
This upper-level course delves into the financial practices and financial management of today’s businesses. it covers issues such as cash flow, planning, procuring funds, managing long-term funds and working capital.
Prerequisite: Admission to upper division in Mays Business School

INFO 210 - Fundamentals of Information Systems (offered Spring and Fall)
This introductory class exposes you to information systems concepts, as well as how information systems are used in the functional areas of business. The course also provides an overview of hardware, software and popular operating systems.
Prerequisite: For business majors

INFO 303 - Statistical Methods(offered Fall)
Collection, tabulation, and presentation of numerical data: sampling, estimation of averages and variation, probability and error, hypothesis testing and correlation.
Prerequisite: Admission to upper division in Mays Business School

INFO 364 - Operations Management (offered Spring and Fall)
In this course, you will gain an understanding of the concepts, issues and techniques used to plan, analyze and control systems of production. It also addresses the operational problems incurred while producing goods and services.
Prerequisite: INFO 303 or concurrent enrollment

MGMT 211 - Legal and Social Environment of Business(offered Spring and Fall)
This course evaluates the role of government in business and society. You will cover a variety of topics, which include: the analysis of social policy and legal institutions; ethical problems in making mangement decisions; administrative law; antitrust law; employment and discrimination law; regulation of business transactions; protection of property rights; regulation of information in markets including securities and product safety; and international business law.
Prerequisite: Sophomore classification

MGMT 363 - The Management Process(offered Spring and Fall)
This course addresses such topics as goal setting; planning, controlling and decision-making; models for thinking about organizations; organization change; models for understanding individual behavior; job performance and job satisfaction; interpersonal behavior; motivation and leadership; behavior in work groups, careers in management, ethics and international management.
Prerequisite: Admission to upper division in Mays Business School

MGMT 373 - Managing Human Resources(offered Fall)
Strategic issues in managing human resources; shared responsibilities of line managers and human resource staff for developing and implementing human resource policies and procedures; human resource planning; job design; analysis and evaluation; staffing; compensation; performance appraisal; training and development; career management; legal, ethical and international issues.
Prerequisite: MGMT 363

MGMT 450 - International Environment of Business(offered Spring)
Broad survey of international business issues analyzes the environment in which international businesses operate; introduces multinational enterprises, global competition, international organizations, treaties and international law, national trade policies and the determinants of competitiveness of U.S. firms in international markets.
Prerequisite: Admission to upper division in Mays Business School

MGMT 466 - Strategic Management(offered Spring and Fall)
This upper-level course will give you a better understanding of the strategic issues organizations face, such as top management decision-making and social responsibility. It also covers environmental and industry analysis; establishing organizational mission and objectives; corporate, business and functional-level strategy formulation; global and multi-domestic strategies; strategic implementation and control; integrating operations, finance; marketing and human resource strategies; case analysis.
Prerequisites: MGMT 363; FINC 341; INFO 364; MKTG 321; senior classification

MKTG 321 - Marketing(offered Fall)
This class focuses on the institutions, processes and problems involved in transferring goods from producers to consumers. It also addresses the economic and social aspects of these processes.
Prerequisite: Admission to upper division in Mays Business School
