Frequently Asked Questions

How do Business Honors classes compare to regular classes?

In an honors class, you don’t simply cover more material, read twice as many books, or work more complicated problems.  What you will do is think about how theory applies in practical situations, or how something from one scenario can be applied to another, or how the course topic is evident in current events. Business Honors classes require you to think critically, not just memorize the material.

Is there more work involved for honors classes?

For most of your honors classes, yes, but you really won’t mind. It’s not just “busy work”- honors classes are more interesting. You’ll want to do your reading and be prepared to participate in the discussion. With the small class sizes, you can’t hide in the back of the classroom and hope not to be called on. Besides, most everyone in the class will be a friend and you don’t want to be the only one who didn’t do their homework. We do more small-group work and presentations in honors classes and that takes time. But, that’s why you only take one or two honors classes a semester. You’ll be involved in learning that’s more interesting and engaging and you’ll want to give it some extra time and effort.

So Business Honors isn’t a big time commitment?

Business Honors allows you to be as involved as you would like to be. As we said above, the classes take a little more time but they are worth it. But they are classes you would take anyway so there are not additional courses required. The requirement to attend three professional development events a year is easy to do. There is a mandatory meeting at the beginning of each year, but no weekly meetings. You’ll have plenty of time to be involved in other organizations, get a job, or be a student-athlete.

I’m interested in doing the double major in Business Honors and another business discipline. How will that work?

The Business Honors major consists of courses you’ll take regardless of your major so the degree plan easily overlaps with the other BBA degree plans in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Management of Information Systems, and Supply Chain Management. You would simply choose to use some of your 26 hours of electives to apply towards your second major. The vast majority of our Business Honors students choose this double major route.

Can I major in Business Honors and go to medical school? Law school?

Absolutely. You would take all of the classes you would need for the MCAT or LSAT, and they would count as your elective and science credits. Plus, having a degree in Business Honors shows the admissions people that you can handle a curriculum that is more challenging than normal.

How does the internship process work? Will you help me find an internship?

You will receive three credits for your internship and it can be completed at any time throughout the year after you enter your upper-level coursework. Internships include a wide variety of experiences and include both paid or unpaid positions. As you progress in your studies, you will find that many opportunities for internships become available. It will be your responsibility to find the internship, but we can always help point you in the right direction. You’ll also meet many employers at the Professional Development Events, when they come to your classes as guest speakers, and through the Aggie Network.

Can I major in Business and earn a minor?

Yes, you can minor in anything from Spanish to Dance! There are a few exceptions, but that depends on the college from which you obtain the minor.

Is there more than one Honors Program?

Yes. Texas A&M University offers two university-level honors distinctions. To earn University Honors, a student must complete 36 honors credits from a broad distribution of classes. Foundation Honors involves 19 honors credit hours from the different areas of the Core Curriculum. In addition, Mays Business School offers the Business Honors Program.

I didn’t receive any information from the University Honors Program Office. How do I know if I am eligible?

To enroll in honors classes at Texas A&M University, a first semester freshman must have graduated in the top ten percent of his or her high school and have scored at least 1250 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT.
