As a marketing major, how did you become interested in real estate?
I’ve always had that little voice inside of me telling me to look into real estate. Growing up I could easily get sucked into a late night infomercial about flipping properties, etc. I studied marketing with the intention of going into sales but those opportunities are always there. When I learned about the LERE program it just made sense. While many people do it, I didn’t feel like I would ever go back to school if I entered the workforce immediately after completing my undergraduate degree so I decided to stay in school and study real estate. It was definitely the right choice for me!
How did you find this job opportunity?
I was actually cold-called by an agent who worked for Marcus & Millichap. He was going through a resume book and came across mine and was intrigued by my background. I quickly came to be very interested in Marcus & Millichap as well. After a couple of interviews with M&M, as well as other firms, it was clear to me that I had an amazing opportunity presented to me. I jumped on it and have never looked back.
What is a typical day like in your industry?
In investment sales there is no typical day. I sell apartment complexes throughout the region and each day brings new challenges. I represent sellers and they hire me to coordinate every step of the transaction from putting it on the market to getting it closed.
There are many highs and lows in this business. On any given day I may get a new lead, have a deal fall out of escrow, launch a new deal or close a deal. The challenge is not letting your emotions get the best of you; you can’t get too high with the highs or too low with the lows. I do spend a few hours on the phone each day and also spend at least a couple of hours a week driving around and looking at properties. While the numbers are generally the primary focus for investors, you have to know and understand the physical side of the real estate as well.
What is your favorite aspect of your job?
I enjoy the challenge of running my own brokerage practice. At our firm we are all essentially independent agents with the ability to create our own brand under the umbrella of a national platform. I love consulting and co-strategizing with investors about selling their property and creating a marketing plan which will allow them to maximize their return. Personally, I enjoy having the freedom and flexibility to take time off when I want to and not having a cap on my income. There are great rewards (potentially) when you are paid on a 100% commission basis!
